Oops! I did it again.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Happy Galentine’s Day! Happy Palentine’s Day! Whatever way you choose to celebrate it, I hope you’re having a wonderful Saturday. My hubby and I have gotten to the place where we don’t do gifts on Valentine’s Day but we will exchange cards and we will find something to do together. This morning we had our coffee together (and a leftover donut from my class Valentine’s celebration) and then we went for a drive. I brought my knitting, of course!

We stopped first at Wild Oats market in Brunswick. I had thought it would be like a grocery store. Not at all. Lots of gifts and books and kitchen-y stuff and prepared foods. We looked around twice and then we chose a frozen lasagna, a turkey tetrazzini and a chicken tiki masala. Each of these will feed us at least one dinner. If we make a salad, we can probably make it four meals. And we had to try their desserts, right? he chose a (mini) chocolate peanut butter pie and I chose a key lime pie (also mini.) Their Iciardi Mini Print Vending Machine was right between the cashier and the dining room. You didn’t have to buy anything to access the machine. I started collecting these wonderful little prints from their mini print vending machines last year in August. We’ve found vending machines in four states so far and we’ve only started to visit the machines in Maine. Today we hit two locations and we took the back roads as much as we could. It was a beautiful day for a drive and we had fun.

Our second stop was at the Maine Beer Company in Freeport. We collected a few more mini prints there and we saw a couple of beautiful Golden Retrievers, too. I told hubby we could stop and he could try their beer flight but he wasn’t eager. So … off we went prints in hand. We have just started talking about what we want to do with the prints and we’ll probably frame some of our favorites for the kitchen, and I’d like to display some in my atelier. I’ve given a few away already and have another one to give to someone special this week. We have a couple of duplicates but they make me (us) happy as is their mission. We’ll be going out to collect more one day soon.

I cast on a new project in the car on the way down. I’ll be making the Thistle on the Moor Vest in Berroco Lanas Light, 100% wool. I bought a tweedy-lavendery-rosey-grey-ish color # 78117. I’ll be making the fourth size. I’m doing this while waiting for some lace weight mohair from Berroco in the charcoal colorway for my daughter’s sweater. I have one ball here that I’ll be swatching with. Needless to say, I’ve brought home two sweaters worth of yarn this week. I brought home some clearance yarn for another Ranunculus, too. I hope I have enough but yardage-wise, it’s the same as the first one I made and it’s a worsted. I’ll play with it later, probably.

After I finished my Ranunculus and my Paper socks, I cast on a pair of Rose City Rollers shorties in an unknown, deeply stashed sock yarn. I quite literally have no idea when or where I bought this yarn. It’s not a color that I think I would have fallen in love with. But it’s here so it’s getting knitted up and the Rose City Rollers is a free pattern on Ravelry. If you’re new to knitting shorties or socks in general, except for the needle size (they’re made on a US1) this is a good beginner pattern and the designer explains her process very well. I’ve finished my first sock and started the second one last night. Yay, me!

The fit is good and the pattern is great. I’ll be making more of these for sure. AND they’re quick to knit. I’m letting my Good Trouble yarn rest a bit in time out while I decide what it wants to be. LOL. Next up on my needles are the vest I cast on today, a sweater for my daugther and a sweater for me. I’m considering a shawl cast on but I’m hesitating because I haven’t been wearing shawls this winter. I’ve been wearing more “scarves” that are long and narrow. I have two in particular that I am loving … one is Brambling by Bristol Ivy and the other is Dangling Conversation in Good Karma Farm yarn. Brambling was part of one of my Year of Techniques classes and featured Fiber Spates yarn and an Intarsia technique. It was fun to knit and I loved the yarn. It just so happens that I found some new colors of the same Fiber Spates yarn to make a second one at a Marden’s clearance sale from a yarn shop. I will knit another one and I’m sure I’ll love it just as well.

On another note, I pulled out my Jelly Roll Blanket again this week when I had a zoom meeting to attend and didn’t have to run the meeting. I just had to listen so I reminded myself what I chose to do for this blanket (the project that will likely last forever and a day) and knitted about a foot more on it. I still have a HUGE basket of leftover balls of sock yarn and it grows every time I finish another pair of socks. I may be crazy but I think this blanket will not use up all of my sock yarn leftovers. I may need another idea … maybe Rose City Rollers for my granddaughter and grandson! I don’t think they’ll care if they match and they can choose the pretty colors by themselves!

I baked a batch of my “famous” granola this week, too. Baking also soothes my soul. This recipe was in a magazine back in the 1980s and I’ve been making it and tweaking it ever since. I’ll never share the recipe. I change it up on the regular. And I have finally learned how to make the raisins and cranberries turn to rocks after they’re added. Yay! Hubby and I will enjoy this for breakfast or lunch with some yogurt or milk. We both love it and it’s so good for us!

Happy Easter

I wrote 2024 for a good part of the week … is this a Freudian faux-pas? I may be in denial or I may be overworked and stressed. Not sure which is the most accurate statement or if it’s a combination of all of the three. LOL. Regardless, it’s been a crazy busy week and I am glad to have “nothing” to do today on Easter Sunday. None of our kids live close-by and they’re not able to travel to be with us so we are going it alone again and I have such mixed feelings about being along on holidays. This year it just wasn’t possible for us to travel because of my work schedule. So we will tough it out and maybe we’ll go out to the local nursery and buy some pretty flowers … time will tell.

I worked two extra days this week at the shop because the boss is away. Tuesday was Thursday and Thursday was Saturday and I have no idea what to say Saturday was but I taught the second half of my Colorwork Workshop which included a crochet steek reinforcement and cutting a steek and then adding button bands to the “swatch” so it can be used as a coffee cozy. I had fourteen students and it went quite well. I’ll add this to the classes that I can teach in my list of possible workshops/classes. It was fun to meet the new people who I didn’t know before, which was the majority of the class. AND one of my students went to my high school so it was very fun to reconnect (and we will be getting together again.) After my workshop I stayed and worked at the store. Have I said how much I enjoy the customers at the yarn shop? That’s the best reason to keep working for a small family business.

I finished one sock and will start a second one today. Little socks for my little peanut. Purple is her favorite color for now. This colorway is purple but called “red onion” and I think it’s a perfect name. I am making these little socks 5.25 inches long and hope someone’s little feet don’t grow too much before sock season starts again.

On Friday I finished the embroidery for the pink mitten that I started ages ago. I don’t love working with the fabric that the embroidery pattern is printed on, it’s sticky, but I can now finish the knitting and wash the fabric off and decide as I knit the second mitten if I want to duplicate my efforts on the second one. They may look really odd if I don’t embroider the second one, too.

I’ve cast on for the Big Love cardigan with Berroco Pima 100 … what a bizarre start to a cardigan! You knit two pieces of the collar starting with a provisional cast on and then you pick up stitches for the back and the shoulders … this is a first but I will prevail. I’m trying to find something relatively simple to take with me when I fly to California at the end of the week and so far I’m coming up empty handed. I guess we will see what progress I make and then I will decide.

Last project this week and the one I keep picking up is my Little Tern blanket by Tin Can Knits. This, as I have mentioned before, is the second Little Tern I’ve knitted and I am loving it just as much this time despite my big faux-pas. I didn’t remember until I had nearly finished the knitting the first skein of yarn that I had bought an extra skein “after the fact” and so I didn’t check the dye lots before I started knitting. Needless to say, I have three skeins of one dye lot and one of the other. I had “planned” to use the three original skeins for the body of the blanket and use the last one for the lace edge. Ha! Ha! When you plan … God laughs. Guess which skein I grabbed to start this project? Yup, the odd ball. AND there is a definite color change but I am just going ahead and finishing the blanket because it’s beautiful and I am beautifully human … and I am not pulling out a full skein of work for this! I have yarn for a purple Little Tern in my stash and I will (hopefully) remember to check the dye lots when I start that one. Fingers crossed.

So, today I hope to 1) spend some time on the porch in the sun and 2) go buy some primroses or pansies at the garden center and 3) knit a little. Tomorrow I have to go to the bank for work but I am not going to work today.

Monday, Monday

And here we are at Monday again. It was a short weekend after a very busy week and I’m not sure that one day is enough time for me to recover from busy weeks any longer. I need more down time! Luckily, I have today and then I’m working extra days again this week because the boss is out of town (and will be for almost a month).

On Saturday I taught my first workshop in a couple of years. I think the last one that Glenda and I co-taught was in 2021? The last one was all about Intarsia and this one was all about Stranded Colorwork. I had a large group but it went well and, as usual, there were some who were better prepared skill-wise than others but that is to be expected. It’s good to stretch ourselves and learn new skills – and we have to always remind ourselves that perfection is not the goal. In essence, the workshop has you knit a swatch … there is a charted pattern which was new for some, and there are five colors to use. It was a great class in that they all worked so hard that at 11:55am, I was shocked to see that the class was almost over … and so were they! They were in the zone! I consider that a success. We meet again next week to learn a steek – reinforce the knitted swatch with crochet stitches and then cut the knitting and add button bands (to make a coffee cozy.)

There was one woman in the class who shared the same name (as I recalled) with a woman I went to high school with. She was a grade ahead of me. Turns out they were one and the same. What fun to meet again after all these years. I hope that we can get a group photo next week and I’ll try to take photos of their progress, too.

I thought long and hard about what I would knit next and I’ve cast on a little pair of green socks for my granddaughter. She loves putting on her own socks and she even likes them mismatched. These, I hope will work for her mom who likes to wash and dry … the idea I have may not be conducive to a dryer but we’ll give it a try and see how it goes. I’m not going to share (yet) what my plan is to make these uniquely Sylvie. If it works, I’ll share. For now they’re just little green socks in King Cole Footsie yarn. I use my good old Knittter’s Pride (KnitPro) DPNs in US 1.5 and the Yankee Knitter Sock pattern vanilla sock.

I have also cast on a baby blanket that I hope will be an heirloom for my bonus daughter. I was reminded when I was in NY that I had two more sets of yarn to make the same Little Tern blanket that I made for my first grandchild before Sylvie was even a twinkle. I loved knitting the pattern and I loved the yarn so much that I ordered extra yarn to make two more. (I was taking a series of classes called A Year of Techniques and they came with yarn collections from the UK. Two of the projects called for the same brand of yarn and I chose not to make them but got more yarn for the blankets instead.) Anyway, I cast on a green blanket for the Nugget on Friday and have been happily knitting along … enjoying it just as much as the first one and I’m pretty sure I used the written instructions last time and am using the chart this time!

Little Tern Blanket in Fyberspates Vivacious DK

I have swatched for a Patty tank in Berroco Chai. The swatch gauge is a bit off so I will knit one size up and hope for the best. I think it will be a good summer top and the red color I chose is really pretty – it’ll go so well with my white jeans! I have quite a bit of the Lang Bebe 200 yarn that I made the Newborn Vertebrae with and I think I need to make a pair of infant thumbless mittens and a hat to match for the Nugget and use it up. I have no end to the potential projects that I can cast on and several sewing projects as well. I have to finish the quilt for Sylvie’s bedroom at Yaya and Poppy’s house before they come for a visit this summer (and I have to find or piece the backing). I have a hole in my favorite jeans so I have promised myself that I would patch them up. I found the patch and I think I’ll try sashiko stitching the patch. AND I have a pair of my husband’s boot socks that are wearing thin. I think I’ll repair them before they have holes. I just need to get all of this done!

Fortunately this is not a busy meetings week but I am working Tuesday and Saturday after my second workshop ends in addition to my regular days on Thursday and Friday so my free time is even more precious … and with that, I’m signing off.

Grandmothering

This was my morning view yesterday morning. I was heading from my son’s to my daughter’s apartment before heading home. New York City is so different from home but several parts of my heart live there and l am so grateful to have the flexibility to travel to the city when I am able. I went to help my daughter with childcare so that she could teach a master class in Long Island while her husband was away on business. An extra pair of hands is sometimes helpful. So, I drove down on Sunday morning and came home yesterday … I wasn’t sure I’d make it because of the forecasted snow but I got lucky! No snow until I got to just south of Augusta.

I arrived home to a beautiful post-snowstorm lake. It was sunny and cold and I was so glad to be home. I’ll miss the kids and granddaughter but I brought a bit of New York City home with me – a cold. This morning was pretty rough and I called in the back-up at work so that I didn’t have to work the whole day and can hunker down and relax and get better. I’m drinking tea, staying warm and preparing to go to bed early. It seems like my decongestant and cough medicine has really helped.

While I was away (as usual) I didn’t do a lot of knitting except at nap time. I have been working on a sample for the store – a hair bow. We had a customer in the store last week who was knitting a mohair bow for her mother and we really thought it’d be good to knit a sample for the store. She was younger and we need some youth in the store. I had some left-over mohair in my stash and am using it. The pattern calls for using one or holding two strands of mohair together. It’s a quick knit unless you’re using dark yarn and dark lace weight mohair. LOL.

I have reached the decreases on the second “wing” of the bow. I’m going to switch to light-colored needles and knit on. Hopefully I’ll get it finished and into the store tomorrow or early next week. The pattern is Dahlia Hair Tie Bow. All the details are on my Ravelry page.

This is the delight that kept me on my toes for three days … she is two years old and very independent except when she gets stuck hanging on the bathroom sink and can’t get her feet back onto the toilet. “I need help!” She’s amazing. This grandmother is in love … she knows her numbers and letters, she sings lots of songs and has some very strong opinions. She loves to play in her room and depending on the day, she’s a good eater. Her vocabulary is expanding exponentially and I think her daycare is responsible for that in part. The adults in her life also talk to her all the time and take time to play with her. I love spending time with my family and watching them all supporting each other and loving this little girl. Her face isn’t allowed on the internet so I share these three pictures of our time … coloring, watching movies and insisting on putting her own headband in.

Today I’ve been knitting my Jelly Roll blanket. I’ve finished the fifth and started the sixth strip. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m following the Crazy Sock Lady’s changes to the pattern which makes it simpler to pick up the connecting stitches as you knit the strips together. I started this project thinking of using up all my left-over sock yarn scraps of which I have quite a few. I also had some white fingering weight yarn that I hadn’t used and started holding two strands together … one white strand and one scrappy strand. I’ve decided that after five strips I’m not using up enough of the scraps so I’m altering the “plan” and am using two strands of scraps for a while so they really get used up! It’s super scrappy! I have a feeling that it’ll be super cozy to sit under.

I have one stitch to finish before my Christmas socks are finished. I had dropped a stitch and could only pull it up so far before it would have made it really wonky. I will pull it through to the back/inside of the sock and using a length of yarn, I’ll weave it in and that’ll be good. And I hope to finish the hair bow tonight.

Tomorrow I will be casting on my Bang Out A Sweater project. MDK is hosting the event and the goal is to complete a sweater during the month of February. I love the cardigan they’re knitting but I think I’ll knit a colorwork pullover sweater that I have the yarn for in my stash. It’s been sitting in a cupboard for too long … and then maybe I’ll buy myself the yarn to make the cardigan. Or maybe I’ll make the Stockholm Slipover with the orange yarn. I don’t know … decisions are difficult. Regardless, I’m casting on Cardoon by Isabel Kraemer in Kingston Tweed by Fibra Natura. I have two shades of purple, one light and one dark, the contrast is minimal so it’ll be interesting to see the yoke when I get there.

I brought some crud back from New York so I’m staying home today and worked only part of the day yesterday. I don’t want to share germs with my Friday knitters but I’m really bummed because Friday is always my favorite day.

Ahhhh … Sunday

I turned my alarm off this morning and slept for an extra (almost) hour! It was lovely to ignore my alarm. We had coffee indoors because the morning was a bit too cool for outside on the porch but it’s warmed up quite nicely and I think I will be opening a window or two today.

I went upstairs to get some knitting and got sidetracked as often happens. First because I didn’t feel like knitting my sweater and I’ve finished a couple of projects this week. More on those later. So, I went up to my studio and started looking through my Ravelry queue and found the cowl pattern that Glenda and I bought on our trip to Knit City Montreal. I had seen what I thought was the same cowl on my bosses FB page this morning, too, which was partly why I thought about the next project to cast on. Anyway, I pulled out the yarn (a full hank of peach and two mini hanks of black, all tweed, all really soft and will be great against the skin) and wound it up. When I had a first glance at the pattern, though, I realized that I didn’t feel confident with the cast on and so I sat down to watch the tutorial suggested by the designer and thought … why not just cast on with the video? So, got my needles and yarn and sat down again. Needless to say, I have my stitches cast on, the tubular cast on is completed and I have my 168 stitches on the needles.

The yarn is so pretty and the sunshine so glorious that I thought I should take a photo of my new start … that’s when I realized that I had downloaded a NEW pattern by the same designer and I had already bought the original pattern a year ago … AND the original pattern has six fewer stitches. So, now I have to decide whether I want to decrease six stitches in my first row after the ribbing and knit the pattern I bought the yarn for OR whether I keep going on the newer pattern (the one my boss saw) and I think I like the original pattern better. So … stay tuned. Hahaha!

So, I will be knitting the First Snowfall Neckwarmer by Runningyarn. With the pretty yarn that I bought at Knit City Montreal when we went two (?) years ago. I loved the peach color even if the combo is a bit unusual for snowflakes, I liked it and chose it and am going to knit it now. I’m on a colorwork spree. I’m about to pull out the provisional cast on stitches and then I’m off and running.

Finished this week … two projects, both quick and easy, taking a couple of days each. First up, the Have Your Seen My Octopus Hat for our granddaughter who just turned two yesterday. This hat is a blast to make and went together so easily and quickly. I will make the pompom today and add it to the top (the body of the octopus) and will take one last photograph of it.

I also started and finished the Writers Mitts (I have no idea where you can find this pattern, sorry). I was given the pattern by our Berroco Yarn rep, Andra, who had knitted a sample pair in the new sport weight Lopi yarn called Fjallalopi in this pretty pink colorway. I was gifted the yarn and when I saw Andra’s mitts, it was obvious what I was going to make. Since I had to buy more pink Remix light, I cast these on Thursday night and knitted them Friday and Saturday and blocked them last night. Super simple pattern, super simple mitts and they’ll be fun to wear in the cooler weather. Or maybe I’ll gift them to somebody … they’re almost dry and ready to go.

I finally remembered to ask my sweet hubby to cut a dowel for me so I can hang the Advent calendar that I made for Sylvie. I have a few things to fill the pockets (a little gift a day) and I guess I’m about 15 short of a complete calendar. I’ve got my work cut out for me between now and Thanksgiving … maybe several packets of organic gummy snacks of some kind will suffice in a pinch. Meanwhile, I’ll check Target this week. I wish we still had the Christmas Tree Shops.

So, I said I’d be out on the porch a while ago and I’d best keep my word. I’m going to stop writing and head out to knit while the weather is so pretty. Meanwhile, a shot of my three little knitted pumpkins on the windowsill with the window open this afternoon. (I’m still in my PJs!) It’s raining leaves!
